Catalina Island commissioned artist Roger Dolin to create a mural that celebrates the island's yearly Independence Day Parade. The mural titled "Independence Day Catalina Island" covers the entire wall of a local delivery service that faces the ferries bringing people to the island so everyone sees it as they set foot on Catalina.
Roger Dolin wanted to protect his mural specifically from graffiti and he reached out to Scott Haskins from Fine Art Conservation Lab to find the best solution for his mural. Scott immediately recommended MuralGuard which he has used on numerous projects.
MuralGuard is a two-component, high-performance, zero-VOC, odorless, water-based, aliphatic polyurethane varnish. MuralGuard provides years of excellent protection for public art projects against harsh weather conditions, UV exposure, corrosion, and graffiti. Additionally, this product has good chemical acid resistance, excellent water resistance, abrasion resistance, flexibility, and is environmentally safe.
2 coats were added to the entire mural with an additional coat added to the bottom 7 feet of the mural as this would be the area with the most likely chance to receive graffiti.
